Tennis and Pickleball offer opportunities to stay active, learn new skills, and connect with others through racquet sports. Whether you are picking up a racquet for the first time or looking to improve your game, Campus Recreation provides programs, facilities, and instruction for all experience levels.
From lessons and clinics to court reservations and social events, there are many ways to get involved. Find a partner, join a program, and discover a lifelong sport while at Penn State.
Court Reservations
Members can reserve indoor and outdoor courts up to 48 hours in advance online, by phone, or in person. Drop-in court availability may be available but cannot be guaranteed. Plan ahead, reserve your court, and spend more time playing.
Twelve outdoor pickleball courts located beside McCoy Natatorium are open daily from sunup to sundown. Twelve outdoor tennis courts located between the IM Building and East Halls are also available for open recreation during the same hours.
Student Tennis
Our focus on Student well-being and development continues to lead us in giving back to our students during their time here at Penn State. If you haven't, stop by our indoor tennis court and give tennis a try during our free student hours. We provide the racquet and the balls. No membership is required to play as it is already covered by your Student Initiated Fee.

We offer playing-level-based clinics for Penn State students. Clinics are a great way to work on your game with other students who play on the same level.

Late Night Tennis is open for recreational play and participants are able to design their own fun. On occasion, one or more of our professional staff will run games designed to include a large number of participants in a fast, fun, and friendly setting. Late Night Tennis is always free for current fee-paying Penn State Students and players can drop-in to participate.

We offer competitive play for students during evening court time. Competitive play may include games, matches, or round robin competition. This time is a great opportunity to meet tennis enthusiasts of all playing levels. While competitive, these events are designed for social and fun interaction. All of these student events are free of charge.

The ACES Junior Tennis Program follows the USTA Youth Progression Model to help young athletes develop skills, confidence, and a love for the game. Clinics, camps, and lessons are organized by age and ability level to provide instruction that meets participants where they are.
Programs range from Red Ball and Orange Ball instruction for beginners to Green and Yellow Ball programs for intermediate and advanced players. Competitive and Elite Training opportunities are available for select athletes, while summer camps provide a fun and engaging experience for players of all skill levels.

Tennis Center
Court availability is dependent on the varsity tennis schedule and when teams are in season.
The Tennis Center is open to Penn State students and public members. We regret that guests are not permitted at this time. For full-time Penn State students, no membership is required to play on indoor and outdoor clay courts.
The Tennis Center is a member of the U.S. Tennis Association and is the indoor home court for the University's men's and women's tennis teams. The center has 4 indoor courts and 6 outdoor clay courts. One tennis court can be converted into two pickleball courts.
Tennis Center Policies and Procedures

- All users must swipe in at the Tennis Center Customer Services desk prior to beginning play
- Membership or court fees must be paid in advance of taking the court
- When taking your assigned courts, do not walk across adjacent courts when possible. Patrons can access their courts through the outside path for the clay courts or hallway behind the indoor courts so as not to interrupt play
- All patrons must clean debris and remove personal items from their court at the conclusion of play
- The facility is to be used only for tennis and pickleball activities unless permitted by Campus Recreational professional staff
- Be mindful of others playing:
- Do not go behind another court to retrieve balls, ask that the ball be returned.
- Limit the number of balls used.
- Keep noise to a minimum so others can enjoy the facility.
- No more than 4 players on a court.
- Do not enter the court area before your reserved time, and allow patrons to finish the point in progress.
- Leave your court when the time expires to allow the next patrons to begin play.
- Patrons under the age of 18 must abide by the following policies and procedures:
- Always be supervised by their parent/guardian or an authorized Campus Recreation staff member
- Arrive to the Tennis Center dressed and ready to participate. The men’s and women’s locker rooms at Campus Recreation facilities do not allow youth to use them for changing or showering purposes
- Will be escorted to the restrooms by two authorized staff members in accordance with Penn State Policy AD39
- The Tennis Center is the home venue for the Men’s and Women’s Varsity Tennis Teams. The Varsity Tennis Teams receive priority scheduling while in season and use the Tennis Center as a rain location practice site during the off-season. Patron court reservations and lessons maybe get canceled due to Varsity Tennis usage with short or little notice
Equipment Use
- Equipment is intended for tennis/pickleball use only
- Equipment should be used in the manner it was intended
- Damage to equipment may result in replacement cost and suspension of use
Weather and Environmental Conditions
- During rainstorms and adverse weather, the outdoor clay tennis courts will be closed, and the entire area cleared of patrons at the discretion of the Campus Recreation staff on duty
- If lightning or thunder is detected within a 10-mile radius, the outdoor clay tennis courts will be cleared. Please collect all personal items and seek shelter indoors
- The outdoor clay tennis courts close annually from early November to mid to late April depending on the weather
- The Tennis Center, at its discretion, may close or cancel scheduled programs, court reservations, lessons, and clinics for inclement weather, player safety, maintenance, Varsity Tennis practice, special events, and tournaments
Shoe Policy
Whether playing indoor or outdoors all shoes must be a tennis court type shoe or white sole. All Black Soled Shoes Are Prohibited.

- All cancellations of reserved courts must be done 24 hours in advance of reservation. Reservations made less than 24 hours in advance of playing time cannot be canceled.
- Members will be billed for not appearing for their reservation
- Non-Members will have their credit cards charged. for not appearing for their reservation.
- During the Penn State holiday break the club will be open. Permanent reservations will need to be cancelled in person one week prior to break.

Open court time includes any court available for rent on a non-regular basis. Advance reservations can be made by a club member, a valid Reservations Privilege Card holder, or a non-club member hold by credit card and can be made no more than one week in advance.

- Permanent reservations can be made at any time for a specific time and day for the entire season.
- Deposit of $50 per hour required for all permanent reservations.
- Complete deposit is forfeited if a No-Show or default occurs.
- Changes in permanent reservations must be verified at the pro shop.
- Specific courts cannot be guaranteed.
- Pre-paid courts for the season receive discounts. See court attendant for details.

Group Rentals Available at discounts to groups to rent the entire complex during the indoor season on Friday and Saturday evenings. Please ask court attendant at the Tennis Center for details.
